Senior levels of CENTCOM altered intel to hide the realities of our efforts against ISIS
The J.V. team.
According to a new report issued by a federal investigative task force, senior members of the U.S. Central Command altered intel to make it look like our battle against ISIS was going better than it was. According to the findings, lower-level analysts were assessing and disseminating information correctly but their reports were then altered by the higher-ups.
As CBS News reports:
The report finds that, beginning in mid-2014, final intelligence reports issued by CENTCOM contradicted the initial internal assessments made by its own analysts, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Axelrod.
"The facts on the ground didn't match what the intelligence was saying out of the United States Central Command," said Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., a member of the task force.
The military CENTCOM is responsible for American security interests in 20 nations, stretching from Egypt through the Arabian Gulf region and into central Asia.
In other words, the results of our efforts in Iraq and Syria were not what they were cracked up to be - so they simply altered the reports. ...And the only reason we know this is because a whistleblower refused to stay silent.
The task force stemmed from a whistleblower complaint from a senior analyst at CENTCOM alleging that intel had been manipulated. The complaint is under active investigation by the Defense Department inspector general.
"There's enormous evidence about how this information from talented career professionals inside the analytic arm at CENTCOM did their job and accurately depicted what was going on on the ground, but when it got to very senior levels, that information was changed," Pompeo said.
The report could find no evidence to directly tie the White House to the alterations, but this certainly doesn't look good for the administration. Given the President's embarrassing efforts to shrug-off ISIS as the "J.V. team," and his ongoing reticence to deal with the problem of radical Islam as a whole, it's clear they'd rather this little nugget had not made headlines. It's simply yet another example of members of the current administration downplaying the reality of our global situation for political gain.
Whether the White House was involved or not, the buck stops on the President's desk.
No wonder the Obama has such a fondness for prosecuting those who dare reveal the truth.
