MSNBC Host Lawrence O'Donnell: We can't cover the Bob Menendez trial, because Donald Trump is on Twitter
Plus 'It's hard.'
If all you watched was mainstream, left-leaning, news outlets, you'd probably have no idea that a sitting Democrat Senator was currently at the center of a massive corruption and bribery trial. That's because the trial - which is saddled with a deadlocked jury - has enjoyed what amounts to a media blackout since it began. Here's how the charges were (briefly) laid out by the Washington Post
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) was indicted on federal corruption charges Wednesday, accused of using the influence of his office to advance the business interests of a longtime friend and political supporter in exchange for luxury gifts, lavish vacations and more than $750,000 in campaign donations.
The laundry list of Menendez's ethical issues actually goes a lot deeper, since those "lavish vacations" allegedly involved the hiring of prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, but that's the gist of it.
The charges were filed back in April. Since then, virtually no Dem-friendly media outlet has been reporting on it. We all know why. The bias is so obvious at this point that no one seriously tries to deny it anymore.
Still, hacks like MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell occasionally try to pretend they're doing their best to cover these sorts of stories. According to O'Donnell, they simply can't. The reason? Donald Trump.
It's seems Donald Trump is so awful that they have no choice but to ignore Democrat corruption. Trump is on Twitter, you see, and there are only so many hours in the day. As O'Donnell said during a recent radio interview:
“If we had anyone else in the White House, if we had any other president in the White House, any other of the Republicans that were running for president, never mind, have Hillary Clinton as president, the Menendez trial would be a very big item in all of our coverage. But this is what Donald Trump has done to coverage; the trying to keep up with everything the president is generating on a given day is just overwhelming. Now you have a special prosecutor and that is more important case than the Menendez case. If it not were for the special prosecutor’s investigation and the congressional investigations and the Trump presidency, Menendez coverage would be much higher.”
Uh-huh. Sure it would. Anyone buying that? No? You think it sounds like a complete load of the smelliest manure you've ever had the misfortune to encounter? Good instincts.
O'Donnell was then asked why Dems aren't asked to demand Menendez step down like Republicans are being asked to demand Roy Moore step down. The Twitter rationalization was employed as a dodge...
“There's a difference in asking a sitting Senator to step down than asking a candidate to step aside. ...Easier to ask a candidate to step aside.
I think this is a serious problem the Democrats have with Bob Menendez that they are allowed to duck - by the way, this is one of the reasons why you don’t want your president tweeting all the time or at all if you’re a Republican. If you’re a Republican who wants the Bob Menendez trial to get more coverage, one of the things you want is a completely disciplined Republican Party that does not make news.”
So, because Twitter exists, MSNBC can't cover Bob Menendez's obvious (and other not-so-obvious) crimes? Sorry MSNBC, no one's buying it.
I suspect the real reason Lawrence O'Donnell doesn't have time to cover the Menendez trial is that he's too busy with expletive-filled rants designed to STOP THE HAMMERING!!!!
