Let's pop some corn and watch Trey Gowdy tear into Secret Service Director Julia Pierson
The pause that refreshes
It's Wednesday. Mid-week. Hump day. You're halfway to your weekend, you've been working hard, and you deserve a treat. So why not sit back, relax, and watch Trey Gowdy grill some desperately outmatched federal employee?
In this instance, the government worker bee is Secret Service Director Julia Pierson. She's fallen under Gowdy's harsh gaze because of a spate of security failures at the White House. To be fair, the Secret Service isn't exactly the country's most despised federal agency, so this isn't quite as much fun as watching him roast someone from the IRS - but it's still pretty great.
Specifically, it seems that someone named Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez took a few potshots at the White House back in 2011. According to his lawyers, he was suffering from severe depression stemming from his belief that the world was teetering on the brink of Armageddon. He was tried and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The weird part is that, when the incident happened, the secret service agents on duty heard shots, drew their guns, smelled gun powder, and then wrote the whole thing off as a car backfiring. Evidence of the shooting was eventually located by a housekeeper - not by the secret service.
According to Ms. Pierson, the reason was simple. The shots were fired at night ...and "it's difficult to see at night."
